I am impressed. Whoever created this site did a great job!
They have great default styles (with Pokemon related names!

), smilies, images, custom mood, privacy options... etc. etc. I like it, I like it a lot!
Test Post
Posted by absolut at 10:27 AM on September 8, 2003 in General.
I never have anything interesting to say with test posts.
Um... on the menu for today
- add/drop line, at 1pm
- go buy a present for C
Testing autolink: livejournal
I set it up so that it will cross-post to my lj, but it doesn't cross-post any edits to the entry. Makes sense.

Every year it's add / drop
Posted by absolut at 12:35 AM on September 10, 2003 in Journal.
Yesterday the admin office for add/drop opened at 1pm. I got there at 12:30, and already the line was stretched all the way from the office to the front door of the building (it's a long way) and starting to double back. I stood in line for about 10 minutes but I knew that I wouldn't make it to the front by 4pm, when the office closed. There wasn't any point so I left.
I went off to the computer lab, chatted with some friends etc. and went back to the office at 3:30pm. By that time there were about 40 students still waiting. Bill (one of my profs) was walking down the line handing out numbers. He said that they couldn't possibly get to us today so we should come back tommorrow, but since we had the numbers we had a higher priority.
So this morning, I got there at 9am when the office opened, and I got to wait at a special, shorter line for people with numbers. The numbers started at 45, and I was number 78. It definitely pissed off the people who were at the front of the normal line, some I heard were there one and a half hours already!! I'd be fighting mad if I were in their position.
Not that I didn't have to wait either. I was in that special line over 2 and a half hours. 2 and a half hours! That was because people kept on showing up with numbers below me and jumping to the front of the line. Even though us people with the higher numbers were waiting patiently for so long. I suppose those people did their waiting the day before, but still, I was third in line to the counsellors for ever so long...
What I wanted to do was add this course that was currently full. It was the only one section that could fit into my timetable, and yet the counsellor wouldn't stop questioning me and saying that the section was full enough as it was. But I persisted, and I finally go to add it. Yay!
It wasn't worth all that waiting though. Every single year it's this bad, and nothing is done about it. Well, this year they did allow for people to do add/drop online before they switched to paper add/drop, but it doesn't look like that made a difference at all.
Earlier this year I filled out this survey for the
University Report Card, which is the student's review of their university. My biggest comment against my uni was the LONG LINES. And food prices, too... I should have mentioned that.

Campus Exchange
Posted by absolut at 11:50 AM on September 12, 2003 in General.
I wonder how useful
books4exchange is? It's a website that allows you to post textbooks to sell and to buy textbooks too. I've had to listen to many complaints about how textbooks are so expensive. There is a used book store at my uni, but they charge a hefty commission and it's not good if you need to cash immediately. I can't find anything on the site mentioning commissions, so maybe they are providing the service for free? I'm not sure.
Then there's the fact that a lot of the textbooks are new editions this year and you can't get them used.
It may be better to just have a site specific to a university where not only can you trade books, but other things like furniture and electronic equipment, such as
this.
Stickies!
Posted by absolut at 12:15 PM on September 12, 2003 in Announcements as a stickied post.
Having a sticky entry is a great idea.
I have a Livejournal, it's here. I'm going to be cross-posting. So if LJ is your thing, you can add me there, and if tabulas is your thing, you can add me here! It shouldn't make a difference.
Update: As you can probably tell, I don't post here too often. I should have realized that once I stick to something, I tend to not want to move. My
LiveJournal is where it's going to be at, but it doesn't mean I won't be around to comment.

See ya around!

Friday Five - Names
Posted by absolut at 07:39 AM on September 15, 2003 in Meme.
1. Is the name you have now the same name that’s on your birth certificate? If not, what’s changed?
It’s not the same, at first I only had a chinese name but when I was around 4 I got an english name. It’s been changed on my birth certificate. I use my english name exclusively now.
2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?
There is some confusion here in Canada about what my first name is - my chinese name or my english name. I like to think of my english name as my first name, and my chinese name as my middle name. However on my health card and driver’s license only my chinese name is shown. I’d like to actually get that fixed.
3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)
My parents named me, I don’t know why they picked the name. I used to dislike my english name (mainly because when I was younger a lot of people would spell it wrong) but now I quite like it.
4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?
For a guy, I like the name Algernon. It sounds so cool. Wouldn’t necessarily want to name any son I have that though.
5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com / triggur.org / astroexpert accurate? How or how isn’t it?
I haven’t read the kalabarians.com analysis for a while, I remember though that only some of it was accurate. The triggur.org one is incorrect but it is funny.

And I wasn’t aware of astroexpert before.
Hail!

We just got a quick hailstorm over here

. It lasted about 3 minutes - there were
huge chunks of ice hitting our window and the balcony - it was really loud!
Yesterday I watched
American Wedding. It was funny, I'll give it that (I think American Pie was the best out of the three of them). Stifler was my favourite person in this movie. I'll forever associate Seann William Scott with this character. The only other movie I've seen him in was
The Bulletproof Monk - and when I saw that, I immediately thought "Stifler" and his character seemed a little less believable.

Felis Mortis
Posted by absolut at 06:00 PM on September 17, 2003 in Journal.
This week at our uni is clubs week. It's a chance for all the clubs to gather in one place and get new members. There are over 100 different clubs, so the community centre has been
packed with students all week! I've been volunteering to sit at the booth for my club and even while I'm sitting behind a table it's hard to breathe

.
Clubs range from the
Dragon Boat Racing Club to the
Chinese Debating and Public Speaking Association (the latter have people walking around with clipboards asking every asian-looking person whether they want to join

).
But the most interesting club name I've seen so far is the
Felis Mortis Society. Felis Mortis in Latin stands for "Dead Cats". And this isn't by accident - they had a skeleton of a cat on their booth. They have images from last year on their
website - weird!!

| absolutium is a milky, runny lavender gel obtained from the bile of a sphinx. |
| Yet another fun meme brought to you by rfreebern |
Bile??! That's icky.

(link from wingsofpaper)
Out of curiousity, I put in
vodka as a username and this is what shows up:
Mixing absolutium with vodkallium causes a violent chemical reaction, producing a cloudy indigo potion which gives the user the power of acid-spitting.

More news is good news
Posted by absolut at 11:56 AM on September 20, 2003 in General.
I found out yesterday that Yahoo! news is
syndicating their content! It's good news 'coz now I can read the news on
my own portal rather than the generic my Yahoo! one.

I think a cool thing about syndicated content is that you can format it anyway you like. And the best thing of course is that you don't have to be subjected to any ADVERTISEMENTS!!!
Oh, and apparently
some fish caused a fire in Japan. The fish are to blame :p but they sure are
cute!

Update
Posted by absolut at 01:50 AM on September 25, 2003 in Announcements.
Updated my
LJ layout. If I have time I'll try to figure out how to change it over here. I'm not in the mood to look into it right now.

But!! I think the default styles here are nifty enough.

Scriptygoddess has a script to
convert LJ entries into the the MT import format. It's so convienient, the last time I tried to do something like this I had to do many search-and-replaces.
An ideal boy: charts from India
Posted by absolut at 01:05 PM on September 28, 2003.
Do not lean out of balcony. Fighting causes injury. The link has some scans from a book describing how to become an "ideal boy". My favourite one is right at the bottom of the page - "Do not talk while sharpening". What is that girl trying to do, stick a pencil up her nose?? :p

Note 2: I made it by signing up
